GEN reviews efforts to improve postdoctoral training

Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News (GEN) published an article on the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) stakeholder summit and the many efforts to improve postdoc training. Some improvements can be made at the graduate training level, where clearly defined timelines and career development would help interested students pursue non-academic career paths instead of moving into a postdoctoral fellowship. The fewer remaining postdocs would be in higher demand and have the power to influence their working conditions. Postdocs can also benefit from professional development programs that teach about other career tracks and impart important soft skills. The biggest challenge is changing the culture of postdoc training to include professional development and to value non-academic career paths.
