ASBMB Interviews Kenneth Maynard: Part 3
In the final installment of a three-part series, ASBMB asks Kenneth Maynard how industry research differs from academic research. In industry, as in academia, you get to work with top scientists and need to make sure your work is being funded, though instead of NIH funding, you may be seeking investors or business grants. Industry also afford the options to transition from bench work to different fields, such as marketing, medical writing and intellectual property work. In a large company the benefits may differ greatly from academia and can include promotion plans, relocation packages, subsidized child care, and philanthropic opportunities. Maynard points out that the biggest challenges for industry PIs are reproducibility and moving basic science findings to clinical trials in a safe and timely fashion.
