The stigma associated with leaving academia

 In News

Phil Jones, Head of Publisher Outreach at Digital Science, addresses the stigma associated with leaving academia. In his post “We’re not Drop-outs, We’re Quitters. There’s a Difference!” on the scholarly kitchen, Jones discusses how leaving academia is like any other job change. Not that the job change is easy. Postdocs often struggle to shed the identity of “academic” and have few resources to guide them into nonacademic fields. The large number of postdocs, as compared to open faculty positions, motivates the departure from academia, and our work force is befitting from having  this highly educated talent pool. Instead of stigmatizing this job change, institutions should put more effort into supporting it.
